They succeed the Axon 20 5G and the Axon 20 5G Extreme launch ed in September 2020. The duos main competitors would be the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, and even the OnePlus 9 series as all these high-end smartphones were also launched around the same time. Prices

The ZTE Axon 30 Pro is more affordable compared to the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra. It’s actually almost half the price of the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra as the 6GB/128GB model of the Axon 30 Pro starts at  ¥2998 ($459.65), whereas the 8GB/256GB model of the Axon 30 Ultra starts at  ¥4698 ($720.30). The huge price difference is mainly because of the difference in specifications between the two phones. As for the other ZTE Axon 30 Pro models, the 8GB/128GB goes for  ¥3298 ($505.60) and the 8GB/256GB models for  ¥3598 ($551.60).

Display

The ZTE Axon 30 Pro is well equipped when it comes to the display. It sports a huge enough display for gaming and day-to-day tasks. The display measures 6.67 inches in size and uses an AMOLED panel. The display has a 1080 x 2400 screen resolution with a 120 Hz screen refresh rate and a 360 touch sampling rate. It boasts a total pixel density of 395 pixels per inch and a screen-to-body ratio of 87.2%.

It is further hardened with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen protection which protects from easy scratching and cracking. The display also houses an under-display fingerprint sensor. Although these features might look great, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro leaves the Axon 30 Pro in the dust as it boasts a bigger 1440p display with up to 515 pixels per inch and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus screen protection.

Software, Chipset and GeekBench Benchmark Scores

The phone runs on ZTE’s MyOS 11 based on Android 11. The chipset is probably the only part where the ZTE Axon 30 Pro is similar to the Mi 11 Pro. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G chipset that has an octa-core CPU and the Adreno 660 GPU. This processor is paired with 6GB RAM and 8 GB RAM with 128 GB and 256 GB UFS 3.1 of internal storage respectively.

In terms of performance, the Axon 30 Ultra packs a punch. On Geekbench single-core tests, the 8GB RAM model scored a total of 1128 points which is higher than the Red Magic 5s which scored only 923 points. In multi-core tests, the phone managed to score a total of 3769 points which is not bad considering it beat the Red Magic 5s with over 300 points.

Cameras

The cameras are the main selling point of the whole ZTE Axon 30 series. The ZTE Axon 30 Pro boasts a quad-camera setup at the rear. The camera module is rectangular shaped with huge lenses which give it an aggressive look similar to that of the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The camera module houses a 64 MP main sensor with image stabilization, a 64 MP ultrawide camera, a 5 MP macro sensor, and a 2 MP depth sensor. Next to the sensors is a vertical strip of dual-LED flash. The camera records 4K videos at 60 fps which is poor when compared to the Mi 11 Pro as it manages to record 8K videos at 24 fps.

The selfie camera is a 16 MP sensor in a centrally placed cut-out on the front display. It records 4K videos at 30 fps giving you high-quality video calls and selfies. When it comes to the selfie camera, the Axon 30 Pro actually beats the Mi 1 Pro as the Mi 11 Pro only manages to record 1080p videos at 60 fps.

Battery & Extra Features

The battery section is disappointing. The Axon 30 Pro only has a 4200 mAh battery. However, it supports 55W fast charging via a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone. Again, the Mi 11 Pro obliterates the Axon 30 Pro as it has a bigger battery, with up to 67W wired and wireless fast charging. The Mi 11 Pro wins by far when it comes to the battery section.

In the comms section, the Axon 30 Pro has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, and NFC. The inbuilt sensors, it has an accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and compass.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is probably the best smartphone ZTE has ever produced. If you thought the ZTE Axon 30 Pro looked cool, wait until you see the Axon 30 Ultra. It looks sleek, premium, classy, beautiful color options and packs a lot of power both in the chipset and camera section. The phone comes with 4 color options which are black (top), white, gold, and pale turquoise. Of all these color options, the Gold Axon 30 Ultra looks beautiful and very stylish. Here are some image of the Gold and Pale Turquoise for you to judge;

Prices

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is a high-end smartphone hence its high price range. The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is available in 3 prices. The 8GB/256GB models goes for ¥4698 ($720), 12GB/256 model for ¥4998 ($766) and the ultimate 16GB/1TB model for ¥6666 ($1022).

Display and design

It is has a very solid built as it is made of a glass front, an aluminum frame, and a glass back with a very fine finish. It weighs 188 g and is 8 mm thick. It is both thinner and lighter than the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra since the Mi 11 Ultra weighs 234 g and is 8.4 mm thick and don’t forget the enormous camera bump at the back.

For the display, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra boasts a 6.67 inches Full HD+ curved AMOLED display capable of displaying over 1 billion colors. It has a 144 Hz screen refresh rate and a 360 touch sampling rate. This boasts a 91.1% screen-to-body ratio and a pixel density of 395 pixels per inch. For screen protection, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra display is equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 technology. It has HDR10+ support, always-on display and it also houses an under-display fingerprint sensor. As much as it sounds great, the Mi 11 is still far much better in my opinion.

Software, Chipset and Geekbench Scores

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra runs on MyOS 11 based on Android 11. It is powered by what is currently the fastest processor in the Android ecosystem, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G chipset. This chipset boasts an octa-core Kyro 680 CPU and an Adreno 660 GPU. It is paired up with 3 memory combinations. There’s an 8GB/256GB model, a 12GB/256GB model, and the ultimate 16GB/1TB model. Not even the Mi 11 Ultra to the S21 Ultra has this much RAM and internal storage which goes to prove how much the Axon 30 Ultra means business in the high-end smartphone market.

In terms of performance, the Axon 30 Ultra scored 1131 points on single-core tests on Geekbench. This is just 4 points below the Red Magic 6. On multi-core tests, the phone managed to pocket 3768 points which are a whopping 37 points ahead of the Red Magic 6 Pro.

Camera

ZTE Axon Ultra cameraZTE Axon Ultra camera

The camera is also a major selling point on the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra. It sports a quad-camera setup at the rear. The main camera is a 64 MP sensor with optical image stabilization. The 2nd lens is a standard 64 MP sensor that is unstabilized. The remaining 2 lenses are an 8 MP periscope telephoto camera and a 64 MP ultrawide camera. Next to the lenses is a dual-LED flash. This camera setup records 8K videos at 30fps and 4K videos at 60 fps. It supports HDR10 and 10-bit video. For the selfie camera, the phone has a 16 MP sensor in a cut-out on the display. It records 4K videos at 30 fps and 1080p videos at 30 fps.

In my opinion, the camera setup on the ZTE Axon 30 is better compared to that of the Mi 11 Ultra. This is because you get a higher megapixel main camera, ultrawide camera, and standard camera sensor. However, the Mi 11 Ultra has by far a much better periscope telephoto camera at 48 MP.

Battery and Extra Features

The battery on the Axon 30 Ultra is a bit better than that on the Pro model. It has a 4600 mAh non-removable battery with 66W wired fast charging support via a USB-C port. On the downside, it doesn’t support wireless charging or reverse charging which would have made it a better competitor as the Mi 11 Ultra has all 3 charging features.

In the comms section, the Axon 30 Ultra has a Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and GPS. It has sensors like the accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, a compass, and not forgetting an under-display fingerprint reader. It misses a 3.5 mm headphone jack, FM Radio, and an Infrared port.

Difference between the ZTE Axon 30 Pro and ZTE Axon 30 Ultra

Differences between these two smartphones lie in the display, memory, camera, and battery sections. The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is better in every section. It has a higher screen refresh rate at 144 Hz, more memory as it has up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of internal storage. The highest amount of memory you will get on the Axon 30 Pro is 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB internal storage. It the same scene in the camera section as the Axon 30 Ultra has a periscope camera and the Axon 30 doesn’t have one. It also has a bigger battery with a faster fast charging capability. The Axon 30 Ultra is just better in all ways, even the design looks much prettier.
