When compared to its predecessor, the Tecno Camon 16, the Tecno Camon 17 brings with it new features and also a ‘new’ design at the back. The back of the phone is now has a rectangular camera module unlike the Camon 16 which had a centrally placed camera module. The refresh rate on the Camon 17 has also received an upgrade from 60 Hz on the Camon 16 to 90 Hz. This feature has also been implemented on the Spark series which is Tecno’s entry-level smartphone series. The Tecno Spark 7p and the Spark 7 Pro also come with a 90 Hz screen refresh rate. From our review of the Tecno Spark 7p, the increase in refresh rate makes scrolling much more fluid but the quality of the display seems to be the same.

Tecno Camon 17 Review and Specifications

Tecno has reduced the display size of the Tecno Camon 17 when compared to the display size of the Tecno Camon 16. Now the Tecno Camon 17 sports a 6.6 inches HD+ IPS LCD display with a 90 Hz screen refresh rate and a 20:9 aspect ratio. Most Tecno fans would have an AMOLED display for the Camon 17 series but still, it uses an IPS LCD. The most probable reason would be if Tecno used an AMOLED display on, it would mean the Camon 17 would have to be a bit pricier. So the use of an IPS LCD display is just to reduce the cost.

For the processor, the Camon 17 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset. This chipset is a mid-range gaming processor as it also has the MediaTek HyperEngine Gaming Technology. What this does is that it implements intelligent resource management that ensures sustained performance and longer gameplay. This chipset is paired with 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM. For internal storage, the Camon 17 comes in 2 models, there’s a 64 GB model and a 128 GB model. The whole system runs on HiOS 7.6 based on Android 11 out of the box.

The rear camera has also received a bit of a downgrade and there still no sign of an ultrawide lens. The whole camera system has a triple camera setup with a 48 MP main camera, a 2 MP depth sensor, and an AI lens. It has modes like the super night portrait mode, Cinematic Master mode, 2K Time-Lapse, Video Bokeh, etc. This system records 4K videos at 30 fps. For the selfie camera, the phone has a 16 MP selfie camera in a dot-in cutout on the display.

This time, Tecno included one of the features that have been lacking in most of the previous Camon series smartphones, which is proper fast charging. The Camon 17 is fueled by a 5000 mAh non-removable battery that supports 18W fast charging via a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone. This reminds me of the Infinix Note 4 which was launched in 2018 with 18W fast charging but with a smaller battery. Also, the Camon 16 didn’t support fast charging which made charging hours very long.

Tecno Camon 17 Pro Review and Specifications

The Tecno Camon 17 Pro probably the best Camon series smartphone at the time of writing this article. Not only does the phone have more superior specs, but the camera system is insanely good.

The phone sports a 6.6 inches Full HD+ IPS LCD display with a dot-in cutout for the selfie camera and a 90 Hz screen refresh rate. It runs on HiOS 7.6 based on Android 11 just like the base model (Camon 17). Under the hood, the Camon 17 Pro boasts a MediaTek Helio G95 chipset. Just like the Helio G85 on the Camon 17, the MediaTek Helio G95 is a gaming chipset. It has up to 5% higher CPU performance and up to 8% higher GPU performance than the MediaTek Helio G90T found in devices like the Realme 7. This is clear that the Tecno Camon 17 is aimed at mobile gamers who are on a budget.

For memory, the Camon 17 Pro has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. This is double the storage on the Camon 16 Pro which shows just how Tecno is upping its game.

The cameras are the main selling point of the Tecno Camon 17 Pro. It has a quad-camera setup at the back with a 64 MP main sensor, a 2 MP macro camera, a 16 ultrawide camera, and a 2 MP depth sensor. The selfie camera is a 48 MP front-facing camera in a punch-hole cutout on the display. The back of the phone is also very clean as the fingerprint sensor is side-mounted. However, an under-display fingerprint sensor would have been a better choice.

The battery is a 5000 mAh non-removable battery which supports 18W fast charging. Charging is done via a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone. Extra features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3.5 mm headphone jack, accelerometer, and a proximity sensor.
